The Format

An opportunity for a bit of fun winter Outrigger racing with minimal hassle, Just Rock-Up and Race.

Clubs will field mixed gender V6 crews, who will race against all other crews and for fun also as part of a team made up of crews from 1 or 2 other clubs. The course will be from the Sussex Yacht Club and run 5km up the River Adur and back. It will be a time trial format with the first crews being sent off at 3-minute intervals. When a crew crosses over the finish line their time will be logged, and they will pass their boat over to the next crew in their team, who will start their time when they cross over the start line.

At Shoreham we have four V6 canoes and over a high tide we can race 3 heats up and down the river, which would allow a maximum of 12 crews to race. If there are only 8 crews there will be 2 Heats either side of high water. Before high water crews will race up with an incoming tide and with the current against them coming back. Over the high tide the water will be slow moving or slack and once the tide turns it will be against crews running upriver but with them coming down. So, what you gain in one direction you lose in another, or you get no help.
