Outrigger Canoe Clubs in London

London has several dedicated outrigger canoe (OC) clubs, ranging from competitive racing teams to community-focused groups. Here are the primary clubs:

1. Royal Canoe Club (RCC) – Outrigger Section

Located on Trowlock Island in Teddington, this is one of the most established outrigger groups in the city. They use the non-tidal stretch of the Thames (the same area where you might see them paddling past Hampton Court).

  • Focus: Competitive and recreational paddling.
  • Equipment: They have a fleet of OC6 (six-person) canoes, as well as OC1s and OC2s.
  • Location: Trowlock Way, Teddington, TW11 9QY.

2. Outrigger Club United Kingdom (OCUK)

Based in Chiswick, OCUK is the UK’s largest outrigger-specific club. They paddle on the Thames Tideway (the tidal part of the river), providing a more challenging environment with tides and currents.

  • Focus: High-level coaching, race training, and “Aloha spirit” social paddling. They compete in major events like the Great River Race.
  • Location: ULU Boathouse, 81 Hartington Road, Chiswick, W4 3TU.

3. Royal Docks Outriggers

Located in East London at the Royal Albert Dock, this club offers a very different environment, paddling on the large, sheltered docks rather than the moving river.

  • Focus: Team sports, fitness, and introducing new people to the sport. It is ideal for those living in East London or near Canary Wharf.
  • Location: London Regatta Centre, 1012 Dockside Road, E16 2QT.

4. Teviot Estate / East London Community Canoe Club

A newer community-led initiative based in Poplar. While they offer various paddlesports, they specifically incorporate outrigger canoes as part of their community outreach and female-focused programs.

  • Focus: Community inclusion and accessibility.
  • Location: Poplar / River Lea area.

Key Considerations for Joining:

  • Taster Sessions: Most clubs (especially OCUK and RCC) offer “Learn to Paddle” or taster sessions if you are new to the sport.
  • Governing Body: For more information on races and other clubs outside London, you can check the Great Britain Outrigger Canoe Association (GBOCA).
  • The Boats: These clubs primarily use OC6 (six-person) canoes for team sessions, but many also provide OC1 (solo) and OC2 (double) canoes for members.
