Transposing a score in MuseScore is a quick fix, but making sure those changes stick when you share an embed code (usually via MuseScore.com) requires a specific “Save and Upload” workflow.
Here is how you get that done.
1. Transpose the Score
First, you need to change the key in the MuseScore desktop application.
- Select All: Press
Ctrl+A (Windows) or Cmd+A (Mac) to select the entire score.
- Open Transpose Menu: Go to Tools > Transpose.
- Choose Your Method:
- By Key: Choose the new key signature you want.
- By Interval: Move everything up or down by a specific distance (e.g., Major 3rd).
- Check “Transpose Key Signature”: Ensure this box is checked so the sharps and flats at the start of the lines update along with the notes.
- Click OK.
2. Save and Sync to the Cloud
Since embed codes pull data from your MuseScore.com account, simply saving the file on your computer won’t update the embedded version.
- Save Locally: Press
Ctrl+S to save the file on your hard drive.
- Publish/Update: Go to File > Publish to MuseScore.com.
- Replace Existing: If you have already uploaded this score, MuseScore will ask if you want to update the existing score or upload a new one. Choose Update existing score.
- Note: This is crucial. If you don’t update the online version, the embed code will keep pointing to the old, un-transposed version.
3. Grab the New Embed Code
Once the upload is finished, the online version is now in the new key.
- Go to your score’s page on MuseScore.com.
- Click the Share button (usually a small arrow icon).
- Select Embed.
- Copy the code snippet provided.
[!TIP]
Check your Transposing Instruments: If you are writing for Clarinet, Trumpet, or Saxophone, make sure you are toggling the “Concert Pitch” button (bottom right or top toolbar) to see how the notes look for the player versus how they actually sound.
